When Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished,” and He bowed His head and gave up His spirit. John 19:30
It is finished. . . . Three words and a final breath and we are saved. We gain eternal life while our precious and perfect Savior loses His life. Pure, all-consuming, self-sacrificing love for a people who constantly fail Him. He loves us with His whole heart and we can’t give Him ours. We are consumed by the darkness that Jesus died to defeat. But guess what? This isn’t it for us.
When Jesus said “It is finished” on the cross, He said “It’s not over” to us. The One who was completely sinless took on all sin for us, and we are saved. But sometimes, we hear this truth so often that we become numb to it, saying, “Oh yeah, we’re saved, praise Jesus.”
But remember that the Holy Spirit writes that truth on your heart at your Baptism. Receive the amazing salvation Jesus so graciously gave us! Receive the awe-filled love Jesus has for us, the only truly unconditional love. All of our worries, addictions, and sins are already defeated for us. The devil is defeated, and now we eagerly await the day Jesus either calls us home or returns for all the faithful. Rest easy knowing you are saved!
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for those three simple words that assure me of my salvation in You. Help me to live each day as Your child. In Your name I pray. Amen.
