Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from Your presence, and take not Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit. Psalm 51:10–12
As each year draws to a close, many people make New Year’s resolutions, but often those resolutions don’t make it out of the month of January. Think back to how far your last resolution made it.
Many people look at the turning of a year as a clean slate, but as Christians we receive a clean slate each day because of what Jesus did for us on the cross! When we cry out to our heavenly Father and ask Him to create in us a clean heart, as David did, He hears us and He forgives us. He draws near to us!
Instead of creating a daunting resolution, why don’t we pray to remember each day is a new start? We pray that God works in our hearts in whatever way He knows is best. We pray that God gives us the strength to accomplish exactly what He wants us to do. God blesses us in a multitude of ways every day, so we can learn to thank and trust Him in all things. We can pray for the restoration of our joy and hope and daily renewal through the Word and Sacraments.
Prayer: Dear Lord, help me to remember that even when I slip up, You are there to rescue and renew me. Thank You for giving me Your Word to guide me. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
